In 1989, Barbara Manui and Chris Adams submitted their second strip to TSR for possible publication in Dragon magazine. Titled simply "Γ" (the Greek letter "gamma"), it was serious take on Jim Ward's Gamma World* roleplaying game. The intention was to explore the dramatic ramifications that postapocalyptic life with mutations would provide. Adventure, sure, but closer to Dune than to a dungeon with lasers.
Editor-in-Chief Kim Mohan was intrigued. He wrote back, "This is something we have never seen before." The staff gave it its best consideration, but it was stymied by Chris' limited skills at the time, and the fact that Gamma World itself was then out of production.
While Aether Tales has roots in various fantasy traditions and different roleplaying games, it has long been divorced from the aspects of any other person's invention. "Γ" is very much a yarn spun from obbs, brutorz, and the various mutational powers invented by TSR writers for the game. As such, beyond the first two completed color pages, only the original roughs are shared here, as the authors have no intention of adapting or developing this curious story any further.
